When working with families with young children, I try to encourage parents to just let me handle things, don't worry about your kids misbehaving, and let me lead you and your little ones through a photo session that is relaxed, silly, and down right FUN! I will capture some traditional poses with everyone smiling and looking at the camera (as I know we all enjoy having a few of those; especially us moms!). However, I will also capture candid images, playing games with the kids to capture giggles and natural smiles-avoiding the "SAY CHEESE" smiles that we all can remember from our portrait experiences growing up! :) I'll send you my "family portrait questionnaire" before the session to get to know you and your family on a more personal level.
My approach with families with older kids will be different (we obviously won't be playing "ring around the rosy," or using potty talk to get them laughing--that would be just weird!). I won't give away my secrets but I will say that older kids quickly warm up to my laid back approach and enjoy the experience just as much as the littles do! I hear quite often that the older kids and tweens were surprised that they actually...gasp... had FUN!
My goal by the end of the session is to truly capture your personalities and connections with your loved ones. I encourage my families to interact with each other, to be silly with each other, to enjoy this time together while I follow along and capture real emotion, real interactions that only your family shares.
